Theme 9: What Is the Second Coming?
The Point — The Course defines the Second Coming not as a future physical return of Jesus to the world, but as the complete correction of perception and the restoration of Christ as one shared identity. It is the point at which forgiveness has been allowed to rest on everything without exception, error has been recognized as error, and sanity replaces the thought system of separation. Nothing real is restored because nothing real was ever lost. What returns is awareness of what has always been true.
The Second Coming is universal because Christ is universal. No one is excluded, no time period is privileged, and no individual awakens in isolation from the Sonship. It represents the completion of the Holy Spirit’s teaching function: all minds are given to Christ, learning reaches its final purpose, and the way is prepared for the Last Judgment—the final recognition that what is false is false and what is true has never changed.

Where It Fits — The real world represented perception completely forgiven. The Second Coming is the universal completion of that correction. It is not God entering the dream. It is the dream finally ceasing to obscure Christ.
The Takeaway — The Second Coming is the return of sanity in which forgiveness becomes complete and the one Christ is recognized in everyone.
Section Lessons — The lessons within this section describe the inner conditions of the Second Coming. Judgment is recognized as the source of tears, darkness gives way to light, and Christ is welcomed as the Self that was never truly absent. Perception is explicitly named as a mirror of mind, and Christ’s peace becomes the alternative to the world the ego made. The student then relinquishes conflicting wishes, releases the ego’s use of time, and turns inward without fear because holiness—not sin—is found there. The group ends in fearlessness and Love, with the present moment becoming the place where Christ is born into awareness and the Second Coming is enacted through the individual mind.
