The power of decision is my own
The Point — This lesson makes one of the Course’s strongest claims about causation: the world of suffering is inseparable from the mind’s decision for a thought system in which suffering appears possible. The purpose is not blame. Jesus is returning power from an external world to the mind, because only there can salvation occur. At the level of personality, people obviously do not consciously choose tragedy, illness, loss, or pain. The Course is speaking from its deeper metaphysical level: the dreaming mind chose separation and then experiences the consequences of the system it chose. If decision helped make the dream seem real, decision can also accept another perception. True humility is therefore not saying, I am a helpless victim of what God made. It is accepting that God did not create the world of fear—and that you retain the power to choose truth instead.
What’s Undone — The belief that external conditions possess final authority over the state of mind and that salvation therefore depends upon changing external causes.
Where It Fits — Lesson 151 removes confidence in private judgment. Lesson 152 restores something in its place → the power to choose which thought system interprets experience.
The Takeaway — Responsibility is not guilt; it is the restoration of choice to the level where correction is actually possible.
