What Is a Miracle?

The Point — A miracle is a correction of perception. It does not create truth, change Reality, or repair something God allowed to become genuinely damaged. It looks directly at what seems devastating and reminds the mind that the interpretation making the devastation ultimate is false. The miracle therefore operates within perception and time, exactly where forgiveness operates. It corrects the upside-down perception of the ego so that what seemed to justify fear, attack, or condemnation can be seen differently.

This is why forgiveness is the “home of miracles.” Christ’s Vision looks on what the ego used to curse and gives it another purpose: what seemed to prove separation becomes an opportunity to remember Love. The miracle is both given and received because correction cannot be extended without strengthening it in the giver. At first this requires faith—the willingness to trust a vision not yet fully seen. But corrected perception eventually produces its own witnesses, and experience confirms that the forgiven world is more real than the fearful interpretation it replaced.

Where It Fits — The previous section exposed the ego as the belief system of separation. The miracle is the Course’s name for the correction of that belief system at the level of perception. It does not create Reality. It clears away what prevented Reality from being reflected.

The Takeaway — A miracle does not change Reality; it changes the perception that made Reality seem absent.

Section Lessons — The lessons within this section show what miracle-mindedness looks like when lived. Attack is recognized as an attack on one’s own awareness of innocence, and forgiveness is allowed to rest on everything without exception. Sacrifice is exposed as impossible, while the law of Love establishes that every gift given to a brother is simultaneously received. Miracles then become the natural extension of forgiveness: what you offer returns to you because giving and receiving are one. As judgment is surrendered, anger and fear lose their apparent cause, Christ’s Vision replaces personal evaluation, and the sequence culminates in the recognition that every miracle reflects God’s eternal Love and restores His memory to the mind.
