A Course In Miracles Teacher’s Manual 4

What Are the Characteristics of God’s Teachers?

Summary — The characteristics of God’s teachers are not personality traits, social styles, or spiritual appearances. Teachers may look completely different outwardly. What gradually becomes common among them is a shared inner orientation produced by trust. Trust is foundational because the teacher has begun to learn that Reality is not governed by the fearful laws the ego assigns to the world. From trust grow increasing consistency, non-judgment, gentleness, joy, defenselessness, generosity, patience, faithfulness, and finally open-mindedness. These qualities are not imposed as moral standards the teacher must perform correctly; they emerge as the ego’s assumptions are relinquished. The Manual is careful not to list Love, perfection, sinlessness, or knowledge as acquired traits, because these belong to the Son’s inheritance and do not need to be learned. The characteristics described here belong to the process of unlearning that clears the way for what was already given.

  • Trust — the foundation. The teacher increasingly trusts a Power beyond private egoic judgment. The Manual describes this developing through periods of undoing, sorting out, relinquishment, settling down, unsettling, and finally achievement. What first feels like loss gradually reveals itself as release from what had no real value.
  • Honesty — inner consistency. Honesty means more than truthful speech. Thought, word, and action cease contradicting one another. As internal conflict decreases, conflict with others becomes less meaningful.
  • Tolerance — relinquishment of judgment. The teacher no longer assumes a position from which another person’s Reality can be judged. Tolerance follows trust because judgment implies that appearances are more trustworthy than the Holy Spirit’s interpretation.
  • Gentleness — strength without harm. Harm is recognized as incapable of producing genuine gain. Gentleness is therefore not weakness; it is the strength that appears when attack no longer seems useful.
  • Joy — the natural result of safety. As gentleness removes fear and trust replaces threat, joy requires less effort. It becomes the natural emotional reflection of shared purpose.
  • Defenselessness — nothing true requires protection. Defenses protect illusions, not Reality. As the teacher becomes less invested in a self that must be continually defended, laying down defenses feels increasingly like safety rather than danger.
  • Generosity — giving in order to keep. The teacher wants what can be shared. Peace, Love, forgiveness, and healing are strengthened through extension, while anything that must be privately possessed cannot provide lasting value.
  • Patience — certainty without anxiety about timing. Trust in the outcome allows the teacher to release the demand that everything unfold immediately or according to a personal timetable.
  • Faithfulness — applying one Answer everywhere. Advancement is measured by how completely the teacher allows the curriculum to include the whole of life rather than reserving certain problems, relationships, or areas for private judgment.
  • Open-Mindedness — the end of judgment. As condemnation is relinquished, the mind becomes genuinely available to the Holy Spirit’s interpretation. This culminates in forgiveness, the final goal of the Course’s learning curriculum.

Key Correction — These qualities are not a spiritual personality the student must manufacture. They are what increasingly remains when fear, judgment, attack, and self-deception are unlearned.

In Practice — The most useful question is not “Am I sufficiently gentle, patient, or faithful?” but “What am I still defending that prevents the quality already implied by trust from appearing naturally?”

Takeaway — The mature teacher of God is not someone who has constructed a holy personality, but someone whose trust has made less and less egoic interference necessary.
