How Is Peace Possible in This World?
Summary — Peace appears impossible only from within the interpretation of the world that sees conflict, death, attack, and separation as ultimate reality. The Manual therefore says the question cannot be answered without reconsidering whose judgment of the world we trust. Personal judgment sees a world deserving condemnation; God’s Judgment offers salvation. Personal judgment sees death as inevitable; God’s Word says Life has no opposite. These interpretations cannot be reconciled because they arise from different thought systems. The Holy Spirit does not need to change Reality; He gently substitutes His interpretation for ours. Peace then becomes possible because the world is no longer being used as evidence for war. In fact, the Manual reverses the original question: once peace is offered and accepted as the purpose of perception, the strange question becomes not how peace could exist here, but how peace could truly be absent.
Core Principle — Peace becomes possible through a change in how the world is seen, not because the ego’s version of the world finally becomes peaceful on its own terms.
Two Judgments — Your judgment and God’s Judgment say opposite things. One sees guilt, death, and condemnation; the other sees a world that can reflect forgiveness and peace.
Key Correction — The world does not force one interpretation upon you. What appears to make peace impossible is the world as interpreted through the thought system of conflict.
Offering Peace — The Manual makes the principle reciprocal: those who look for war will find its witnesses, while those who offer peace become able to perceive peace.
In Practice — When peace seems impossible because of what is happening, the useful question is: “Is this circumstance proving peace impossible, or am I looking through an interpretation in which conflict has already been made real?”
Connection to the Text — This develops the Text’s repeated principle that projection makes perception. The interpreter determines which world appears meaningful.
Takeaway — Peace becomes possible when the mind stops asking the world to prove conflict real and allows the Holy Spirit’s interpretation to replace its own.
