What Is the Peace of God?
Summary — The peace of God is initially recognizable because it is unlike the mind’s previous experiences. It carries no past association; the past simply recedes and a profound quiet remains. The condition for finding this peace is forgiveness, because anger and justified attack deny peace by insisting conflict is real. Likewise, peace is retained by noticing when anger has returned and willingly laying down the weapon again. The Manual ultimately defines God’s peace as the understanding that God’s Will has no true opposite. The apparent conflict between His Will and yours existed only within the ego’s thought system. Because your true will is one with His, peace is not a fragile emotional state that must be defended; it reflects the disappearance of a conflict that never had Reality behind it.
Core Principle — God’s peace appears when the mind stops maintaining a real opposition between God’s Will and its own.
How Peace Is Found — Forgiveness is the necessary condition because justified anger and attack require belief that conflict is real.
How Peace Is Lost from Awareness — When anger returns, the old belief in war returns with it. The peace itself has not been destroyed, but awareness of it is covered again.
Choosing Peace Again — Remembering even faintly what peace felt like can help the teacher recognize that conflict was voluntarily picked up again and can therefore be laid down.
Life Has No Opposite — The Manual links peace with the recognition that what God created cannot end and that what He did not create has no Reality.
In Practice — When conflict returns, ask simply: “Do I actually want this conflict more than I want the peace I already know is possible?”
Takeaway — The peace of God is the quiet recognition that His Will and your true will were never in conflict, because Reality has no opposite.
